What is the validity of an RYA certification?
Every country has the sovereign right to determine which certifications are valid for sailing in its waters. However, RYA is widely recognized as the best certification for recreational sailors—not only for its well-known emphasis on quality education but also for the authority it carries as a certification from a maritime powerhouse with a long history of yachting achievements. With over 150 years of refining its training methodology, RYA offers one of the most effective and respected educational systems in the world.
What is the difference between RYA and other certifications (C, B, A)?
The RYA training system is designed for those who want to learn and grow, so it places minimal restrictions on you. There are no distance limits from shore—RYA certificates indicate what you are capable of, not what you are forbidden to do. However, they emphasize common sense, encouraging sailors to recognize their limits and strive for continuous improvement.
RYA instructors undergo extensive training, and achieving this qualification is not only a testament to their exceptional sailing skills but also to their ability to teach effectively with a human approach. They must renew their certification every five years, ensuring that the knowledge they pass on is always up-to-date and technically accurate.
RYA is renowned for its high educational standards and, as a certification issued by a maritime nation, it is globally recognized and accepted.
What is the difference between a "Captain" and a "Skipper"?
It’s similar to studying medicine—becoming a "captain" is like earning a specialization after years of study, while a "skipper" is more comparable to completing a first aid course in just a few days. Out of respect for the education and expertise of captains, we refer to various licenses on our website as "skipper qualifications", as our language lacks a more precise term. However, we are still talking about certifications that authorize you to charter a recreational sailing yacht, similar to those commonly known as "captain’s licenses."
What can I expect from RYA courses?
- Truly individual approach – our practical courses have a maximum of 5 students per group.
- Strong emphasis on hands-on experience – students perform all maneuvers themselves, with the instructor taking the helm only in essential or demonstrative moments.

Do I have to start with RYA Competent Crew, even if I am an experienced sailor?
Each course description includes recommended prior experience. If your skills meet the required level, you can confidently enroll in your chosen course straight away.
What does the exam consist of?
In RYA Day Skipper and RYA Coastal Skipper courses, there is no formal exam; instead, the evaluation is done through an assessment process. The instructor works with you throughout the course, reviewing and discussing your skills, providing feedback, and guiding your improvement. At the end of the week, certification is awarded based on progress and achievement of the required standards.
For the RYA Yachtmaster certification, an external examiner boards the yacht during the final two days of the course. They assign comprehensive tasks covering all required skills, and the certification is awarded based on successful completion. All the knowledge and skills needed for this assessment can be gained through our courses.
Do I need to complete the theoretical course before the practical one?
To obtain a practical certificate, you need to have the required theoretical knowledge. Whether you gain it through prior experience or by taking a theory course with us is entirely up to you. The advantage of our training is that it can also be completed online from the comfort of your home, and we highly recommend it for its clarity and efficiency. It includes animations, simulations, and real recordings, which are far more effective than self-studying with books.
However, we strongly encourage you to come to the course already prepared with the necessary theoretical knowledge, regardless of how you acquire it. Once you have access to a sailing yacht for practical training, it would be a shame to spend that time below deck studying theory.
Why choose the RYA Short Range Certificate course for radio operator training?
- RYA SRC courses are practically oriented. Theory is kept to a minimum, focusing on real-life skills like calling marinas, other vessels, and sending emergency messages. You will train on VHF radios identical to those used on boats.
- The course includes DSC and GMDSS training, allowing you to operate all modern radio systems worldwide. With this license, you won’t face any restrictions wherever you sail.
- The course (but not the exam) can be taken online. It features an interactive learning module, including a radio simulator and real call recordings, with six months of access.
- Study at your own pace, whenever it suits you. RYA SRC certificates are valid for life—renewing your knowledge is an option, not a requirement.
