Additional RYA courses
A good skipper is not only defined by their ability to steer a boat efficiently but also by their capability to respond correctly in emergency situations. Sail effectively, but most importantly, safely.

Coure overview
Sailing education covers many areas that may not seem essential at first glance. However, in emergency situations, this knowledge can make the difference between a great story and an experience you’d rather forget.

RYA Short Range Certificate – VHF Radio Operator
In this course, you will learn how to effectively use a VHF radio station. There’s almost no complex electronics—instead, the focus is on the daily life of a skipper: routine calls to marinas, communication with other vessels, handling emergency situations, and calling for help. The certification has no expiration date and includes training in DSC (Digital Selective Calling) and GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System). All practice takes place on fully functional radio stations.

RYA Sea survival / World Sailing Personal Offshore Survival
Hand on heart—would you know how to react if your boat started sinking or caught fire? This course not only teaches you everything about life-saving equipment but also how to use it correctly. The World Sailing Personal Offshore Survival Certificate is essential for participation in prestigious offshore races.

RYA First Aid – First Aid in Remote Locations
Stopping bleeding, stabilizing fractures, performing CPR, providing aid for shock, hypothermia, hyperthermia, and drowning—this course covers life-saving knowledge and practical skills, not just for sailing, but for any situation where professional medical help is limited. You won’t just learn how to provide immediate and effective first aid—you’ll also practice it hands-on.
FAQ
What is the validity of an RYA certification?
Each country has the sovereign right to determine which certifications it recognizes for sailing within its waters. However, RYA is widely regarded as the best certification for recreational sailors—not only due to its renowned emphasis on high-quality education but also because it is a certification from a British maritime powerhouse with a long history of sailing achievements and a training methodology refined over more than 150 years.
Do I have to take supplementary courses in a specific order?
Why should I take these courses if they are not mandatory?
Zjednodušeně proto, že zde projednáváme situace a oblasti které opravdu chcete znát. Nebo byste si říkali že jste je měli znát, když se dostanete do situace která je bude vyžadovat.
Je na doplňkových kurzech i nějaká zkouška?
It depends on the course—some include an exam, while others do not. However, in general, if you complete the course with us as preparation for an exam (and pay attention), you will have no trouble passing. Our goal is not to catch you out on minor details, but to ensure you truly understand the subject matter.
Do I need to complete the theoretical course before the practical one?
To obtain a practical certificate, you must have the necessary theoretical knowledge. Whether you already possess this knowledge from previous experience or choose to complete a theoretical course with us is entirely up to you. The advantage of taking the theory course with us is that it can be completed online. We highly recommend it for its clarity and efficiency, as it includes animations, simulations, and recordings, making it far more effective than self-study with books. Most importantly, we emphasize that you should arrive at the practical course already equipped with the required theoretical knowledge, regardless of how you acquire it. When you have a yacht available for hands-on training, it would be a waste of valuable time to spend it below deck studying theory.
What is the difference between the RYA SRC radio operator certificate and the one issued by our national institutions?
- RYA SRC courses are highly practical. Theory is covered only to the necessary extent, with a strong focus on real-life usage, such as calling marinas, communicating with other vessels, and sending emergency messages when needed. Throughout the course, you will train on VHF radio simulators identical to those used on boats.
- RYA SRC courses include training on DSC (Digital Selective Calling) and GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System), allowing you to operate all modern radio stations.
- The course itself (not the exam) can also be completed online. It is a highly interactive online module, including a radio simulator and real recorded calls, to which you will have access for a full calendar year. This allows you to study at your own pace whenever it suits you.
- RYA SRC certificates are valid for a lifetime—renewal is optional, not mandatory.
Why choose RYA education?
The path you take is entirely up to you, but if you choose RYA, you are guaranteed high-quality, structured education focused on practical skill development from the very start. This approach prevents the need to unlearn bad habits later in your sailing career. Why take a gamble when you can choose a proven system that ensures success?
